McDowell jury encourages judge to proceed with death sentence

After less than three hours of deliberation, a Nassau County jury recommended the death penalty for Patrick McDowell. The count was 11-1 Thursday, with a lone juror favoring life in prison.

Today sea turtle season begins; digging a huge threat

In the next couple of weeks, pregnant sea turtles will begin to come in from the Atlantic Ocean and nest along the beaches of Amelia Island. Sea turtles are always a topic of discussion, especially around this time of year.
According to a report from Electrical Constractors, several underground electrical boxes at the Port of Fernandina are in areas which flood regularly. Underground boxes are common even in wet areas, but any splices should be made with devices that are water resistant and listed for wet areas, the report recommended. Assessment finds maintenance issues at Port of Fernandina

The Port of Fernandina is working to correct issues that were found when the facility underwent an inspection by an engineering firm last year. Electrical Contractors Inc. and R&M Engineering Consultants conducted a needs assessment of the port last December.

Chase leads to arrest of two on multiple charges

Two people, a Hilliard man and a woman, were arrested following a high-speed chase on Barnwell Road. According to the arrest report, the incident began when the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office contacted Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) regarding a possibly stolen pickup truck traveling on SR 200.

OHPA takes no action: Port neighbors balk at warehouse location

The Ocean Highway and Port Authority Commission will not require the port operator to move a fabric warehouse that is not in the location the commission approved, despite complaints from people who live near the Port of Fernandina.

Third grade students at Fernandina Beach Christian Academy (FBCA) have been working through the process of opinion writing. Last week, three classes from FBCA took a field trip to the News-Leader office.
