Amelia Island and Nassau County were not considered part of the Florida Plantation Belt. That distinction would go to the Panhandle area, where British colonists fleeing the American Revolutionary War developed large estates with slave labor.

Man charged with attempted murder in gas bill dispute

A Yulee man has been charged with the attempted murder of his partner following a dispute over a utility bill. The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office received a call on March 8 from the suspect, Dennis Wayne McCabe, 76, of Pamela Road in Yulee.

Public airs concerns regarding park to city commission

The Fernandina Beach City Commission heard from local residents about the plan for a park on the downtown Amelia River waterfront, and the majority said they do not want plans for the park to move forward.

Yulee woman arrested for multiple drug charges

A local woman is facing multiple drug charges after her arrest, which Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said closed a “drug house.” On March 6, NCSO arrested Shelley Renee Crider, 44, of Di Charia Street in Yulee.

Work is underway for school traffic congestion

Callahan Elementary School will soon have a cure for its ongoing traffic congestion.  During an annual joint workshop with the Callahan Town Council and Nassau County School Board, Superintendent Kathy Burns confirmed that work is underway.

End of an era: Robert Fiege retires after 48 years with the News-Leader

Robert Fiege, 64, completed his final day as production director of the News-Leader this week.  He is retiring after 48 years with the newspaper. Fiege began working as a paper boy in middle school and later as an office gofer while still attending Fernandina Beach High School.

FDOT says portion of SR 200 will be replaced in fall 2025

Motorists coming onto and driving off Amelia Island via the Shave Bridge drive over a highway that is crumbling beneath their tires, but the Florida Department of Transportation says the road will not be repaired until 2025.

School board prepared to defend open records lawsuit
