Welcome home: Rehabilitated sea turtles return to Atlantic

Wednesday morning, three rehabilitated sea turtles returned home to the ocean with the help of animal rescuers and turtle advocates in Georgia and Florida.  The turtles, rehabilitated by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island, Ga., were released at the 10 a.m.

Beach nourishment project funding increases to $7.85 million

NCSB holds department budget presentations and workshops

The Nassau County School Board (NCSB) has initiated the budget planning process earlier this year with public workshops and board presentations, a departure from previous years' timelines. In previous years, the superintendent would present the upcoming year's budget to the board for approval.

City commission moves forward with waterfront park plans

The Fernandina Beach City Commission gave landscape architects the nod to move forward with plans for a park on the downtown Amelia River waterfront, despite objections from local residents who ask the plans be halted.

Cannonball jellyfish invade Amelia Island

While pirates launched a cannonball on Amelia Island last weekend to celebrate the Shrimp Festival, thousands of cannonballs were washing up on the island’s beaches — cannonball jellyfish. The gelatinous creatures were seen all along the island’s shores.

This year, events flood the city and county in celebration of the 200-year bicentennial of Nassau County and Fernandina Beach. These festivities preserve our history in the ways we celebrate them.  History is built from the actions and lives of the individuals who have made up these communities.

OHPA questions security company employee policies

Opioid settlement money expands treatment sites in Nassau County

Over the next 18 years, Florida will receive $3.1 billion in opioid settlement monies to combat drug addiction and deaths. The first installment began arriving in February 2023 and, as of December, the state had received $550 million for distribution.
