Pirate swimmers make splash at region, head to state

The Pirates hadn’t had a state qualifier in swimming in six years, until last season. Two qualified. This season, a host of Fernandina Beach High School swimmers will head to state. The 2A meet was slated for Saturday, but because of the storm, will be held Nov. 19 in Stuart.

Hornets heading to Baker

The Hornets (6-4) punched their ticket to the playoffs with last week’s 35-7 win over host Pedro Menendez of St. Augustine. “This week, we had a do-or-die situation,” said Kyle Dougherty, head football coach at Yulee High School. “As a team, we responded.

AVCA honors for trio of Lady Pirates

The American Volleyball Coaches Association recently recognized three Fernandina Beach High School senior volleyball players for their performances this season. Ella Johns, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter for the FBHS Lady Pirates, was named an AVCA High School All-Region player.

Pirates, Lady Pirate qualify for state championship

The Fernandina Beach High School boys golf team and, competing individually for the girls, Sady Campbell placed fourth, respectively, in the Region 1-2A tournament Tuesday. On Thursday, head coach Christina Steffen learned everyone is heading to state.

How one golfing veteran helps another

Coming home can be difficult for a veteran. Shauna Snyder and the On Course Foundation aim to make it easier. Snyder — a Fernandina Beach local and avid golfer — is the military liaison and employment manager for the On Course Foundation.

Bishop Kenny ends Lady Pirates’ season

The Lady Pirates’ stellar season came to an end Friday night at Bishop Kenny. The Fernandina Beach High School volleyball team (20-6) lost to Bishop Kenny 25-12, 25-14, 25-20 in a Region 1-4A semifinal matchup.

Hornets wallop Warriors; Pirates fall to Wildcats

The Hornets pushed their record to 5-4 with Friday’s 35-6 win over host West Nassau. The Yulee High School football team caps the regular season this week at Menendez in St. Augustine. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Yulee jumped out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead Friday and tacked on one more in the third.

Pirates travel to Baker; Hornets take on host Warriors

The 4-4 Pirates travel to Baker County tonight, and the 4-4 Hornets head to Callahan to take on the West Nassau Warriors. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The Yulee High School football team is coming off its 21-14 win over the Fernandina Beach Pirates Monday night.
