Lady Pirates, Hornets play for district crowns

The Lady Pirates shut out the Lady Warriors 3-0 Tuesday night in a semifinal match of the District 3-4A tournament en route to Thursday’s title match against top-seed Stanton. The Fernandina Beach High School girls soccer team (9-4-1 and the second seed) hosted West Nassau (10-8-1).

The Yulee Basketball Asociation held opening day ceremonies Jan. 21 at Yulee Middle School on Miner Road. The league boasts 17 teams. Gamers are played every Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. and running through 6 p.m. Admissions is free

The Pirates (9-11) hosted the Hornets (11-11) Saturday night, and the Yulee High School boys basketball team prevailed 57-44. Yulee jumped out to a 12-7 first-quarter lead and led 27-16 at halftime. Senior guard Jye Thompson led Yulee with a double-double.

After a two-year hiatus, the Governor’s Baseball Dinner returns to throw out the first pitch of the 2023 Florida Grapefruit League season. The 2023 Governor’s Baseball Dinner will be held Feb. 16 at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, the hometown of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Jye Thompson, a senior at Yulee High School, will play football at Valdosta State University. Thompson made the second team All News4Jax team and second team All First Coast. He is currently a basktball player for the YHS Hornets.

Two Pirate wrestlers collect 100th career win

Senior Caden Kubatzke and junior Enzo Gamba picked up their 100th career win last week. “They both achieved it on the same night,” said Eric Kubatzke, head werstling coach at Fernandina Beach High School. “It’s a really great accomplishment to hit 100 wins and not an easy road.
