YHS’s Thompson to play football at Valdosta State

Jye Thompson, a senior at Yulee High School, will play football at Valdosta State University. Thompson made the second team All News4Jax team and second team All First Coast. He is currently a basktball player for the YHS Hornets.

Two Pirate wrestlers collect 100th career win

Senior Caden Kubatzke and junior Enzo Gamba picked up their 100th career win last week. “They both achieved it on the same night,” said Eric Kubatzke, head werstling coach at Fernandina Beach High School. “It’s a really great accomplishment to hit 100 wins and not an easy road.

Third annual Florida Roots Trail Series foot race held

The third annual Florida Roots Trail Series foot race was run over the weekend at Fort Clinch. The race, which has raised more than $8,000 for the Friends of Fort Clinch during its short existence, features three distances — 10K, 30K and Amelia Island’s only ultra marathon distance of 50K.

The Yulee Basketball Association held opening day ceremonies and games on Saturday at Yulee Middle School. The league boasts 17 teams this season. Nassau Pride player Darius Sharpe and coach Julian Williams were on hand to show their support.

Watson aces 7th hole at Amelia

Jim Watson of Fernandina Beach was playing golf with his golfing buddies, the Amelia Island Marauders, at the Amelia River Golf Club on Tuesday, when he shot a hole-in-one on the par-three seventh hole, which played 146 yards. Watson used a 6 iron and a Titleist Pro V 1X golf ball.

The Yulee High School girls basketball team hosted Hilliard Tuesday night. The visiting Lady Flashes beat the Lady Hornets 62-12. Senior night is scheduled for Tuesday, prior to the 6 p.m. tip-off with Wolfson. YHS will recognize players Kyla Cornegay and Ashtyn Parsons and manager Rachel Darst.
