Sixth race of season for sailing club

Saturday was an unexpectedly marvel-ous day for the Amelia Island Sailing Club’s sixth sailboat race of the 2023 season. With temperatures on land approaching  or exceeding 100 degrees for more than a week, with little or no wind, the sailors were expecting a real drifter and baking in the hot sun.

The city of Fernandina Beach Parks & Recreation Department’s summer adult basketball league will culminate next week. The tournament got under way Monday, and games were played Wednesday at Peck Gym. Play continues Monday and Wednesday, with the championship game slated for 7 p.m. Thursday.

Thea Seagraves, the edu-cation director of the Amelia Island Museum of History, asked for volunteers to help her put together a program allowing the older children at the America’s Youth pro-gram in Fernandina Beach to be introduced to the great game of golf.

Overpopulation of snapper

Capt. David Hagins guides his charter guests offshore of Amelia Island on a regular basis and has developed firsthand knowledge on the current status of hard-fighting and excellent-eating red snapper, which is currently a big subject among avid fishermen and seafood lovers, too.

NSFA awards $18,000 in scholarships

The Nassau Sport Fishing Association presented a total of $18,000 in scholarships to six seniors from Nassau County high schools this year.
