World War II veteran celebrates 99

Around 80 years ago, Dale Stickrath was in the South Pacific, flying 17 hours over water in the bottom of a B-24 bomber on a mission to destroy oil refineries. On Monday he celebrated his 99th birthday.

Amelia Island’s African beginnings

Over the last 500 million years, Amelia Island was once in Africa, was in the middle of a mountain range, then coastal, then underwater, then inland and now coastal again. The sand on our beaches is African sand.

Arts Market joins Farmers Market on Saturday

The Fernandina Beach Market Place farmers market will be open Saturday, Oct. 14, and the Fernandina Beach Arts Market will be adjacent to the farmers market every week through the end of October. That’s right, the next three Saturdays will feature both markets in downtown historic Fernandina Beach.

County commits money to municipalities

Nassau County Board of County Commissioners adopted a policy that allows the county to fund grants of property taxes to the towns of Callahan and Hilliard and the city of Fernandina Beach. Funding is not to exceed $50,000 per municipality per year.

OHPA delays listing property for sale

In a decade or two, the George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park will be replaced by a pier at the very edge of Amelia Island, according to the Florida State Parks department. One end of the pedestrian bridge is closed now, and the bridge will only continue to fall into disrepair.

Sinking sailboat in the Sound

Nassau County Fire Rescue was on scene and had rescue boats in the water at Dee Dee Bartel Boat Ramp at Fort Clinch today around 12:30 p.m. The marine unit responded to a report of a 45 foot sailboat that was taking on water in the Cumberland Sound, according to Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper.
