Judge sentences killer to death for deputy’s 2021 murder

Patrick McDowell, who fatally shot Nassau County Deputy Joshua Moyers during a traffic stop nearly three years ago, was sentenced to death by a judge on Wednesday. In April, a jury voted 11-1 to recommend the death penalty for McDowell, who had pleaded guilty to the murder.

The Nassau County Equipment Operator Apprenticeship Program is now an award-winning program. The educational program was recognized with a 2024 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo).

Janet Adkins campaign announcement, seeks reelection in August primary Janet Adkins, Nassau County Supervisor of Election announced that she is seeking a second term of office in the August 20 primary. Adkins has served as the incumbent Nassau County Supervisor of Elections since January 2021.

Chamber holds county commissioner forums

Last week the Nassau County Chamber of Commerce held candidate forums for the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) District 3 and 5 seats. Two current commissioners prepare to face opponents in this upcoming election.

Nassau County establishes Child Custody Exchange Safe Zone

The Nassau County Sheriff's Office has introduced a dedicated Child Custody Exchange Safe Zone, providing a secure, neutral location for parents sharing custody to safely transfer their children.

BOCC says they will not exempt property owners eligible under Live Local Act

On Monday, county staff recommended that the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners consider electing to not exempt property under the Live Local Act Property Tax Exemption and commissioners agreed.
A temporary art installation was once on this pedestal in front of the courthouse on Centre Street. The base now homes a trash can. Nassau Council of Arts and Culture President Richard Restiano worked with the artist to bring the piece to the city. City may shift public arts program to Parks and Rec

The Fernandina Beach City Commission will consider giving control over art placed in public areas to the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, after the organization that established rules governing public art was sunsetted.
