Veterans Day celebrations around Nassau County

Leah Jones For the News-Leader On Friday, Nov. 11, we take a day to honor all those who have served in our country’s military. With King’s Bay Naval Base to our north and Naval Air Station Jacksonville to the south, there are many military members and veterans in our community.

WHALE TALES

Visitors had a whale of a time at the 2022 annual Right Whale Festival with vendors, live music, beach yoga and a host of other activities based on the theme “Preparing the Ocean Nursery.” The Right Whale Festival takes place the first weekend of every November.

Mobile Veteran Center to provide services today at Wildlight YMCA

Veterans can receive services free of charge today at a mobile veterans center at the Wildlight YMCA in Yulee. Melissa Yuchasz, Operations Director for Florida First Coast YMCA said the mobile unit will be at the YMCA from 9 a.m. until noon.

Nassau County preps for Storm Nicole

As waters were rising even before Tropical Storm Nicole hit Florida, Nassau County was ahead of the game, prepping for the potential flooding and high winds. Evacuation orders were issued for zones A and D on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The county declared a local State of Emergency Nov. 8.

It’s been a long time coming, but the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners finally settled on the nine priority projects it’ll fund with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money, of which the county has $17.2 million at its disposal.
