Holes left on beaches endanger people, sea turtles

Holes are popping up across Florida’s beaches—including on Amelia Island. Last week, several holes large enough to hold multiple full-grown adults appeared on the stretch of beach south of the Omni Resort, an area exclusive to resort guests.

Vessel fire at Port of Fernandina remains under investigation

The cause of a fire on a cargo ship docked at the Port of Fernandina remains unknown, but none of the ship’s crew were injured and only one firefighter was treated for non-life threatening injuries after fighting the fire.

County commissioner accused of DUI

A Nassau County Commissioner was arrested and charged with driving under the influence Tuesday after the Fernandina Beach Police Department said it received a tip about someone driving erratically on South Eighth Street.

City beach smoking ban gets first OK

Despite impassioned pleas from residents who enjoy a smoke on the beach, the Fernandina Beach City Commission passed, on first reading, an ordinance banning smoking on the city’s beaches. Five members of the public addressed commissioners about the issue.
