On the mark

A triathlon is an exacting test of endurance where competitors push themselves in running, biking and swimming.  With a fourth-place finish in the men’s 45-49 division, Ken Marker has claimed a place at Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Lady Pirates race to state fourth year in a row

The Fernandina Beach high school girls and boys cross country teams competed at the FHSAA 2A Region 1 meet in Jacksonville last Friday with the girls team advancing to the state meet in Tallahassee this weekend for the fourth straight year and the boys qualifying one runner, John William Martin.

Warriors best Pirates in all-Nassau semifinal showdown

One team from Nassau County was guaranteed to head to the Sunshine State Athletic Association final. Behind a terrific rushing output, the West Nassau Warriors (12-1) defeated the Fernandina Beach Pirates (7-5) in a 20-10 war of attrition.

Pirates, Hornets face off on the pitch

The boys and girls soccer teams at Fernandina Beach and Yulee high schools faced off in Fernandina Beach on Monday night. The Pirates bested the Hornets in both matches. The Lady Pirates beat the Lady Hornets 8-0, and the Pirates beat the Hornets 3-0 after a scoreless first half.

Yulee's rally falls short in playoffs

It was a tale of two halves and turnovers Friday night at Yulee High School. Despite storming back in the 2nd half, the Hornets' fell short in their playoff game against the West Florida (Pensacola) Jaguars, who held on 24-16.

Pirates impress at 2A State swim meet

Fernandina Beach High School swimmers competed in the 2A State Swimming Championship Friday, Nov. 7 in Ocala. Overall, the Lady Pirates swimmers finished in ninth Place and the Pirates swimmer finished in 17th.

Pirates, Lady Pirates kick off seasons

The Fernandina Beach High School soccer teams winter seasons officially are underway. The boys team has three games under their belt kicking off the season at 2-1. The Pirates beat Christ’s Church Academy in their first game of the season 8-2 with goals from seven different Pirates.

Trades, matchups place AFC South in focus

The NFL trade deadline is an odd one. In baseball and hockey, it’s usually playoff teams shipping prospects for high-wage veterans. In basketball, teams flip stars regularly. The global transfer market in soccer allows clubs to buy and sell players like stocks.
