BOCC extends invitation for nonprofit funding requests

For the News-Leader The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners has begun the budgeting process for Fiscal Year 2023-24. Nassau County greatly values the benefits and contributions made by nonprofit organizations to the community.

Georgia lawmakers push for Okefenokee to be made World Heritage Site

Georgia lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have begun to push for the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge to be named a World Heritage Site.

Biden administration denies emergency petition for right whales

The Biden administration has declined to act upon an emergency petition filed by Oceana requesting aid for endangered North Atlantic right whales. On Dec.

Berkman Benevolence: Teddy Bear Playground dedication

Right whales halfway through calving season

North Atlantic right whales are officially halfway through the 2023 calving season with 12 calves thus far. Since the annual calving season began in mid-November, mother-calf pairs have made the trip from New England and Canada down to the warmer waters of northeast Florida.

Remembering a hero: Richard ‘Dick’ Henry

Executives from Wounded Warrior Project and the Veterans Council of Nassau County recently honored a late WWII veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor, Richard “Dick” Henry, with a memorial bench in Central Park in Fernandina Beach.

Bagged cement coming into port concerns citizens

Residents of the neighborhood around the Port of Fernandina are concerned about cargo that is coming into the port, and the effects it could have on the area. The port received bags of cement mix, which is in a powder form, this week.

Island businesses are drawn to Wildlight

Like a moth to a light, like a seagull to a beach, Amelia Island businesses are being drawn to the wide open spaces around the Wildlight community in Yulee. The latest local business to expand westward is Mocama Beer Co. – and in a big way.
