Highlights of 2023 ‘The Amelia’ Concours d’Elegance

The 28th annual gathering at The Amelia saw 25,000 enthusiasts gather for featured auctions, driving events and a two-day show on the grounds of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The big show brought shiny cars zipping around winding island streets.

What are the next steps to hire a city manager?

On the agenda for a workshop of the Fernandina Beach City Commission set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, is a discussion of how the city will recruit and hire a new city manager.   Former City Manager Dale Martin’s employment contract with the city was terminated Feb. 21.

Five things to remember as the weather warms up

Amelia Island is home to wildlife of all kinds. As the seasons change, so does the wildlife. The warmer weather means the North Atlantic right whales will return north and the sea turtles will return to Amelia Island to nest, along with other changes in the ecosystem.

Arizona representative aims to RESCUE Whales

Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) introduced the RESCUE Whales Act into Congress this week, aimed at repealing a section of the 2022 omnibus that may impact North Atlantic right whales and prevent them from receiving critical aid in the face of a dwindling population.

CSX and NCEM conduct incident training

Emergency responders from Nassau County are better prepared to deal with the effects of a situation involving hazardous materials being carried by rail after a four-day training held at the Nassau County Emergency Operations Center and a local business.

Youth program turn teens into preparedness leaders

The Youth Emergency Team (YET) is a cooperative program between Nassau County Emergency Management and the local 4-H chapter. The program is meant to empower youth to be able to take control in an emergency situation, giving kids training that is almost equal to that of a first responder.

Rayonier supports county veterans

Vets4Vets is a movement under the Semper Fidelis Society, a Jacksonville-based nonprofit (501)(c)(19) with a mission to inform veterans about policy changes and to connect them with a support network. Veterans4VeteransNassau, sponsored by the veterans council, is devoted to Nassau County veterans.

Seeing the world in black and white

This past Feb. 14, Frederick Douglass would have been 205 years old.  On the occasion of his birthday last month, more than 60 people gathered at Story & Song to learn more about Douglass, Black History Month and how white people can talk about race in a way that moves the conversation forward.
