In my years of experience in the nonprofit world, one word sums up the key to success: Momentum. If your organization, including partners, donors, leadership, staff, is in an ongoing state of moving forward together, you’ve achieved momentum.

The changing role of technology for 2024 elections

Thank you to all the Nassau County citizens who participated in the 2022 elections. Our office is grateful to our election workers, who successfully and safely conducted three elections in 2022. Voter turnout for the general election was 63.23%, one of the highest in the northeast Florida area.

Inaugural annual report and summary

Earlier this week, the City Commission convened for its annual goal setting-session at the city golf course. In addition to the city commissioners, department directors, representatives of various boards and commissions, a few members of the general public and local media also attended.

Healing starts in the gut

Since the global pandemic, many people have become very germ-phobic, trying to eradicate every virus and bacteria they can.

Good listeners

I may be in the minority on this one, but I really admire Shirley MacLaine. Despite the prevailing perception that MacLaine has lost one too many marbles or spent too much time tracking down extraterrestrials, I believe her to be brave and authentic.

What happened to the conversation?

On one of my walks around the neighborhood this weekend, up ahead, I saw a guy approaching, wearing headphones, smiling, and head bouncing with the music. He looked like he was having a great time on his walk. Everyone he passed, he shouted, “Hi!” As he approached me, he shouted, “Hi!”

A fairway wide enough for ships to pass

Research the definition of the word “fairway.” You will find two definitions. One is “the part of a golf course between a tee and the corresponding green.” The other is “a navigable channel in a river or harbor.” Pictured is the fairway at Fernandina Harbor Marina.

Would that his actions were reflective of his words

One thing can be said of the DeSantis era, aka, the political nor’easter that refuses to go away, its commitment to lunacy and weirdness rarely disappoints. Examples are everywhere, scattered like bits of post-party crackers over floors once neatly swept.

More than 200 Daughters of the American Revolution will converge on Fernandina Beach on Saturday, Feb. 18, for the annual celebration of our first president’s birthday.

Update: Capital projects for 2023

Included in this year’s budget are several capital projects. Here is a report on the status of those projects. The most significant project is the construction of the new fire station located on Airport Road just off of Amelia Island Parkway.
