Martin Luther King Jr. honored in Fernandina Beach

The 47th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Fernandina Beach was held on Monday, Jan. 15, and traveled throughout the historic downtown. The family-friendly community event ended at the Martin Luther King Jr.

Dollars for dunes: County will use MSTU funds for beach walkovers

Nassau County beaches will benefit from a change in an ordinance governing how Municipal Services Taxing Unit (MSTU) funds are spent, which was approved by the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners at its Jan. 8 meeting.

Public asked to watch for injured right whale calf

A newly born North Atlantic right whale suffered serious injury recently as a result of a ship strike. Born of the whale Juno, the calf was first seen by a Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute team off South Carolina on Nov. 28.

Timucuan Parks Foundation (TPF) is pleased to report more than 300 children and their families were introduced to Jacksonville’s wilderness parks and preserves in 2023 through their participation in the National Park Service’s Junior Ranger Angler fishing clinics.

Community Redevelopment Area Advisory Board approves park plan

The Fernandina Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, which is made up of the city commission, will hear a presentation from the Community Redevelopment Area Advisory Committee (CRAAB) when they share plans for a park to be built on the Amelia River waterfront in downtown.

According to the National Weather Service, light rain is expected through the overnight but conditions are forecasted to deteriorate rapidly beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday for Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia through early evening when showers move off shore between 6-7 p.m.

County takes greenhouse gas inventory

Nassau County recently took a greenhouse gas inventory as the first step in applying for an Environmental Protection Agency Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) as part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area Climate Cohort.

Right whale calves spotted nearby

The holidays were busy for right whales in local waters, as three right whale calves were spotted nearby. Many whales have been sighted off Northeast Florida in recent surveys, and boaters are reminded to post a lookout and use caution.
