Jacksonville charter school eyes Wildlight

Nassau County’s first charter school, pending the state process, is about two years away, its founder said. Cornerstone Classical Academy founder Lindsay Randall started the school around her kitchen table in 2018. Two years later, the school opened near the St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville.

Splash pad woes

Now open, free to the public in Nassau: A splash pad, unlike anything else in the county. But maybe check with the county before you pull up to Nassau Crossing Park to get in the water.  The county has faced trial after trial in getting the splash pad open and now faces more in keeping it open.

Bridging the gap 

The George Crady Bridge and Fishing Pier is a mile-long pedestrian bridge that connects Nassau and Duval County.  Since its creation in 1948, the bridge has served as a pillar of both communities in being a significant place for families to gather and catch fish.

FHP: Hialeah man shoots at truck on I-95

A Hialeah man has been accused of shooting at a box truck in a road rage incident Tuesday afternoon that involved a chase over state lines, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

County signs fire union agreement, raises pay for firefighters

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners has approved the county’s labor agreement with the local Fire Union.  After a year or so of negotiations, the International Association of Fire Fighters Local #3101’s new agreement will take effect Wednesday, Oct. 1. It is a three-year agreement.

County readies legislative topics

Nassau County is gearing up for legislative sessions in Tallahassee where Nassau’s state representatives, Rep. Dean Black and Sen. Clay Yarborough, will speak on behalf of Nassau to state decision-makers.  The two will meet with county commissioners and staff on Oct.

Beach driving suit reaches settlement

Nassau County and Save Historic American Beach have signed a settlement agreement in regard to the nonprofit’s lawsuit.

Nassau County budget, millage rates OK’d

Nassau County held its final public hearing Monday to adopt its upcoming Fiscal Year budget and millage rates.  The Board of County Commissioners approved several motions during the final budget hearing. No public comments were made.  The 2025-26 budget was approved at $469,601,166.

Florida’s first 24-hour mobile stroke unit underway

UF Health has created Florida’s first 24-hour mobile stroke unit. The vehicle is “a primary stroke center on wheels,” according to Lindsey Perrotta, the stroke program manager at UF Health, Jacksonville.
