Family business celebrates 70 years

Rowland’s Upholstery Plus is celebrating 70 years in business this year. Current owners, and brother and sister, Wallace and Arlene Rowland, have been busy keeping the family business alive. Long gone are the days when their father kept a list of every client in his front pocket.

Speed rules ‘too intrusive’

The American Sportfishing Association recently sent a representative to Congress to, among other things, voice its opposition to vessel speed restrictions aimed at protecting North Atlantic right whales.

Truck backup around port concerns neighbors

Residents of the area around the Port of Fernandina have growing concerns about trucks headed to and from the port backing up, causing traffic in and around the neighborhood to come to a standstill last week.

Beach, love and lavender: Pelindaba Lavender celebrates six-year anniversary

No trip to downtown Fernandina is complete until you’ve visited the lavender store. If you didn’t know to look for Fourth Street as you’re walking down Centre, you’ll probably find Pelindaba Lavender by the pleasant scent of lavender in the air.

IAA art gallery exhibits student art show winners

The Island Art Association is displaying student artwork from the four Nassau County High Schools in the IAA gallery located at 18 N. Second St. in Fernandina Beach. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit runs through the end of March and includes paintings in various media and ceramics.

District 4 Commissioner Alyson McCullough objects to new rep on NEFRC

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners appointed Fernandina Beach Vice Mayor David Sturges as the municipal representative to the Northeast Florida Regional Council, over the objection of District 4 Commissioner Alyson McCullough, who wanted more Nassau diversity on that council.

Florida celebrates a Big and Little match

Every year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America chooses two volunteer mentors (called Bigs) and two youth (called Littles) out of nearly 140,000 in the nationwide mentoring program to be crowned Bigs and Littles of the Year.
