Right whale festival: A reason for hope

This past weekend 20,000 people came out to the Right Whale Festival in support of one of the most critically endangered species on earth. Whale experts educated the public, vendors sold sustainable whale themed goods and kids ran around with their faces painted like sea mammals.

Bountiful harvests and local delights

Fernandina Beach is host to Florida's friendliest farmers market, and it will be open Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. Their sister market, Wildlight Market Place will also be open in Yulee, near Interstate 95.

Since our founding in 1974, Nassau County Council on Aging has seen the county grow by leaps and bounds. With this growth has come a much larger senior population and a much greater need for programs and services. Following the millennium when seniors comprised 16.

Supervisor of Elections Office returns $666,480.93 to BOCC

The 2022-23 fiscal year ended on Sept. 30, 2023. Supervisor of Elections Janet H. Adkins returned $666,480.93 of the previous year’s budget to the Board of County Commissioners. “We are committed to allocating our resources to improve the voting process for Nassau County Voters,” said Janet H.

As part of its Vision 2023 initiative, Nassau County reached out to Rayonier, a timberland real estate investment trust headquartered in Yulee, in 2007 to head a planning effort that would help the county get ahead of the population growth it was foreseeing.

Long hot summer

This past September was the hottest on global record, and Florida had its warmest January to September on record. It was the United States’ seventh hottest September ever recorded, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is proposing changes to its vessel speed rules designed to protect North Atlantic right whales. The changes would broaden the boundaries and timing of seasonal speed restriction areas along the U.S.
