An early morning crash resulted in the death of the driver in a single-vehicle incident that occurred at the intersection of 8th and Sadler Road.
Sunday morning, The Fernandina Beach Fire Department confirmed that a fatal traffic crash had occurred near the intersection and was causing traffic delays.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver was traveling at a "high rate of speed as it approached the intersection" before losing control and crashing the front of his vehicle into a palm tree.
FHP said, the vehicle "became engulfed in flames." The driver was unable to get out and sustained fatal injuries.
FHP does not yet know the identity of the driver.
