Many first rodeos

Since bidding adieu to Manhattan and making the pleasure of Fernandina’s acquaintance, I’ve fallen into quite a few firsts. My favorite first was the welcome shindig thrown by my incredibly thoughtful neighbors.

Fishing on fire

“Bottom fishing has been on fire recently,” said Capt. Allen Mills, skipper of the Wahoo II charter fishing boat. “I recently guided longtime friends and charter clients Mallory Smith, Thad Carter and Zach Terry to a big catch of saltwater bottom fish.

Why the holiday hassles are worth the trouble

A recent newspaper story reported that some 55 million Americans traveled over the Thanksgiving weekend to be with family and friends. The story also predicted that roughly 113 million of us will travel to share Christmas and/or New Year’s with people we love.

Christmas Fair and Farmers Markets this weekend

Saturday, Dec. 16 may have you feeling the stress of a rapidly approaching holiday, but have no fear, the Fernandina Beach Arts Market and the Fernandina Beach Market Place farmers market will have two more markets before Christmas, three before the end of the year. Open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Take the library with you

“Over the river and through the woods to (insert your destination here) house we go.” This poem, written by Lydia Marica Child in 1844, still is true for many of us today, minus the horse-drawn sleigh. Many of us load up the car and head to places near and far to visit our loved ones.

In October, local EAA Chapter #943 hosted its latest Young Eagles Day. Sixty-one budding aviators aged eight to 17 took, what for many was, their first flight, provided by local pilots in their personal aircraft.

Brave new world?

Recently, I attended a Citizens Defending Freedom (CDF) event at the Community Center at American Beach. Seamus Bruner spoke about his new book, “Controligarchs.” I had heard a little about the book before they put this event together, but I dismissed it a conspiracy-laden, apocalyptic fever dream.
