The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office said it arrested a fifth person in connection with a February incident that resulted in a one-year-old child ingesting meth inside a Callahan home.
Mark Allen Windham, 46, was arrested Aug. 22 and charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm and possession of drug paraphernalia with residue.
NCSO previously announced the arrests of the child’s parents and two other residents of the home in connection with the incident: Hayden Simmons, Damien Windham, Erica Foley and Judith Addison.
The investigation began on Feb. 24 after detectives “learned the child drank from a sippy cup that the parents later discovered contained a bag of methamphetamine at the bottom,” NCSO stated.
During the investigation, the other suspects identified Windham as the person who possessed the methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said. Investigators said that neither the child’s parents nor the other residents immediately called 911 after learning the child may have been exposed to the drug.
Simmons and Damien Windham told detectives they witnessed Mark Windham pour the contents of his cup into the toddler’s sippy cup, the sheriff’s office continued.
“Time doesn’t diminish our commitment to accountability. Our detectives continued working this case for months, following leads and pursuing every avenue until they identified and arrested everyone responsible,” Sheriff Bill Leeper stated in an agency social media post. “I’m proud of their persistence and dedication to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community.”
A warrant was issued for Mark Windham’s arrest on Feb. 26 and he was booked Saturday into the Nassau County Jail & Detention Center on a bond exceeding $27,000.
