Single-vehicle crash damages 8th Street business

Two people are in the hospital after the Fernandina Beach Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash in which a vehicle left the road and damaged a business on 8th Street Thursday morning, the agency said.

A vehicle struck the CubeSmart storage facility, 1600 S. Eight St., around 10:54 a.m., causing significant damage to the building, according to a FBFD release.

Two people were located inside the vehicle and taken to receive medical care. Fernandina Beach Fire Department units were simultaneously handling multiple emergency incidents at the time, an agency release said.

No other vehicles were involved and the crash had a minimal impact on traffic, FBFD Chief Jeremy Holmes said. He said the city's Building Department also responded.

"It ran off the roadway and took out part of that building," Holmes said. "We had to call the building official to deem that building unsafe."

The vehicle was later removed without causing any additional damage to the structure, FBFD said.

The crash is under investigation, the release said. Nassau County Fire Rescue and law enforcement assisted with the incident.
