In May 1979 the Navy selected the King’s Bay site to become home to a fleet of submarines capable of being armed with Trident missile nuclear weapons. The project, the largest peacetime construction ever undertaken by the Navy, would take nine years to complete at a cost of $1.3 billion. It would be a major boon to the area economy. Submitted
