County commissioners keep seats

Huppmann, McCullough win in primary

Projected results are in for the Nassau County Primary Election, and the numbers show that voters think the two seated commissioners up for re-election should keep their seats.

District Two Commissioner A.M. "Hupp" Huppmann and District Four Commissioner Alyson McCullough have another four years ahead on the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners.

Candidates up for election to the board this year were actively campaigning; Candidates hosted events, paid for campaign signs and published advertising. Local organizations and individuals began pledging their support to their candidate of choice. The vote distribution between the candidates proved their efforts were not in vain.

It was a close race for current and future District Four Commissioner McCullough, who won by a close margin over Cheryl Plaugher.

Preliminary results show McCullough winning with 51.18% of votes against the 48.82% that went to Plaugher.

McCullough ran an active campaign against Plaugher who received endorsements from several local organizations such as the fire union, the Nassau County Fire Rescue Professionals Local 3101, which had members actively campaigning near voting sites.

After the projected conclusion Tuesday night, McCullough returned to Facebook to make a statement.

"I am truly humbled and honored by the trust you've placed in me to continue serving as your County Commissioner," McCullough said before thanking "every volunteer, supporter, friend, family member, and voter who made your voice heard today."

"Whether you voted for me or someone else, I will continue working every day to serve all of Nassau County with integrity, transparency, and thoughtful leadership," McCullough said. "Now, it's time to get back to work. Thank you for the opportunity to continue serving the community I love."

Huppmann earned 48.35% of the vote in the District Two race. The incumbent faced two opponents in this election, Douglas Green and Laura Dotson who split the other half of the votes nearly 50/50 — Green, 25.73%; and Dotson, 25.92%.

Huppman gave his initial reaction to the preliminary results on Tuesday night.

"I am incredibly proud and humbled that my community has put their trust and support in me once again to continue to deliver servant leadership for Nassau County," Huppmann told the News-Leader. "I am grateful to Ms. Dotson for running a high road, grassroots campaign that focused on issues she believed in.

"I look forward to improving the prosperity and quality of life we all treasure in our community."
