Hornets net first victory of season
The Fernandina Beach High School boys basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season at home Saturday against Hilliard (1-1). The visiting Flashes won 65-35 over the Pirates.
The night before, the Pirates beat Stanton 55-46 at Pirate Gym. FBHS led 24-18 at halftime and outscored the Blue Devils 17-14 in the third quarter to sail to victory.
Jesse Basse led the Pirates on the scoreboard with 14 points, and teammate Ryan Shaw scored 13. Andre Lucas, Kam Hayes and Mason Townsend chipped in six apiece.
FBHS hosted Tocoi Creek Monday. The Toros defeated the Pirates 58-48. They jumped out to a 17-4 first-quarter lead and were up 26-15 at halftime.
The Pirates (3-2) play at West Nassau Thursday and at Episcopal Friday. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. (junior varsity) and 7:30 p.m. (varsity).
• The Yulee High School boys basketball team recorded its first win of the season Friday. The Hornets beat host Terry Parker 48-36.
Jye Thompson led the Hornets with 16 points. Deyvin Dutta scored 11. Jack Reilly had six rebounds, and Houston Harper had five rebounds, an assist and three blocks. Dutta also had a steal and two blocks.
Yulee hosted Westside Monday. The Wolverines won 71-53.
The Hornets (1-4) were hosts to Hilliard on Tuesday, and they play at West Nassau Friday.
• The Fernandina Beach High School Lady Pirates lost to Fletcher Friday and Hilliard on Saturday, dropping their record to 3-2 on the season. Fernandina lost to Fletcher 43-21 and to Hilliard 54-29.
The Lady Pirates travel to Bishop Snyder Thursday and play at West Nassau Friday before a hiatus for the holidays.
They are back in action Jan. 5, when they travel to Yulee to take on the Lady Hornets.
• The Yulee High School girls basketball team lost to West Nassau 47-39 on Friday night. The Lady Hornets played at Hilliard Monday, where they lost 49-16 to the Lady Flashes (4-1).
The Lady Hornets (2-6) host Episcopal Thursday. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
