Lady Pirates beat Lady Hornets in home opener

Fernandina hosts Fletcher Tuesday; Yulee is back home Sept. 20 with Bolles.

The Lady Pirates hosted Yulee Tuesday in their home opener at Pirate Gym. The Fernandina Beach High School volleyball team (3-0) defeated the visiting Lady Hornets 25-18, 25-9, 17-25, 25-11. “Both teams, JV and varsity, are doing quite well,” FBHS coach Damon Gordon said. “The future is bright at FBHS, and we hope for a successful season. Repeating as district champs is our goal. “These girls really do act as a family, and it’s definitely prevalent on and off the court.” Junior Emma Cook led Yulee with 14 kills and three aces, senior Ashley Hall led the team in serve receive passing, junior Leah Kasper led the team in defensive digs, and senior Grace King had 23 assists. The Lady Pirates opened the season with a 2-1 win over Nease and a 3-0 victory over Camden County. In the Camden County match, senior Ella Johns had 12 kills, sophomore Victoria Rushing had eight aces and 12 assists, and senior Grace Castellani had seven digs Yulee dropped to 0-3 on the season. The Lady Hornets lost to Baker County and Bartram Trail in three sets. “We graduated an impressive senior class last year and have a young team this season with only four seniors and seven juniors,” YHS coach Jenna Nelson said. “So far, this group has been flexible and willing to work with trying different lineups to find the best fit for us. “This is a very dynamic group with a lot of skill and potential. We are excited to see how this team continues to grow and improve throughout the season.” The Lady Hornets traveled to West Nassau Thursday and play at Bishop Kenny Tuesday. They don’t play at home until Sept. 20, when they host Bolles. The Lady Pirates host Fletcher on Tuesday. Matches are 6 p.m. (junior varsity) and 7 p.m. (varsity).
