CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

With Nassau County growing so quickly, how would you use your position on the school board to ensure students are accommodated for?

With the influx of students coming to NCSD, we have to prepare for students who will need accommodations due to their 504 or IEP. There will also be students who may not have been in the MTSS (Multi-Tiered Support System) and will have to go through that process to receive accommodations. This requires additional planning time during and outside of the school day. The interventions that teachers implement for those students are in addition to their regular instruction. To ensure that accommodations and interventions are being done with fidelity, it will be critical to have additional support staff.

Even though Nassau County has been doing relatively well in regard to teacher retention in comparison to other districts across the state and the country, many teachers are finding jobs outside the Nassau County School District. As a board member, what would you do to help them stay?

We need to know why they are leaving. Instead of completing exit interviews, we need to create and implement a midyear survey to get the temperature of our staff. The school board would be the people to look at and analyze the data. Then create a plan of action to maintain our strengths and work on our weaknesses as a district.

I have been in education for over twenty years. I want to use my knowledge and my willingness to listen to staff members to help build a relationship between staff and the school board. Staff members need to feel they can trust their board member to discuss things that make them want to leave the district.

How will your specific background help your efforts to make the Nassau County School District the number one in the state?

With over twenty years of experience in education, I feel that I possess the knowledge and understanding of what it takes to not only make our school district number one in the state but be within the top schools in our country.  I have taught all grades kindergarten through eighth grade, written curriculum, helped develop a local private Christian school, and worked alongside teachers to strengthen instruction. This experience is critical when talking to students and families and making district decisions that impact our students, staff, families, and community.
