Pirate golf was well-represented Tuesday and Wednesday during the 2A state championship at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.

The Fernandina Beach High School boys team qualified, and individually, Sady Campbell competed in the girls tournament.

The Pirates finished tied for eighth place, with a two-day team score of 653. Area teams Beachside finished third and Bishop Kenny was 10th.

Junior Tanner Millar tied for 22nd with a two-day score of 157, senior Noah Reynolds tied for 26th with 159, junior Sean Benjamin tied for 55th with 168, and junior Decah McDaniel tied for 60th with a 169. Senior Colby Albert shot 197.

Campbell, a sophomore, finished 22nd with rounds of 84 and 75.

“State finals was a success,” said Christina Steffen, head girls and boys golf coach at FBHS. “The boys went in ranked ninth and finished tied for eighth, so we held our own. They played well and had a top 10 in the state finish.

“Sady went in ranked 30th in the state and finished tied for 22nd. That’s pretty awesome for a sophomore. I am so proud of the boys and Sady. They all represented FBHS well.

“Looking forward to next season already! Go Pirates!”

Campbell’s mother, Kirsten, followed the Lady Pirate both days.

“She came, she played, she finished well,” Kirsten Campbell said. “That’s a wrap for the FHSAA Class 2A State Golf Finals. First day was pretty rough with an 84, tying 33rd out of 96 girls. The back nine ate her lunch! (Wednesday) ... Revenge … Sady had the upper hand. She shot a 75, finishing seventh.

“There will always be the shoulda wouldas, including a triple bogey on the very last hole, but Sady is overall pleased and looks forward to continuing to work hard on her game to return next year.”
