There are moments in life when the world seems to pause, and the true value of time becomes crystal clear. Recently, I had the privilege of spending precious hours with my son who serves proudly in the military. Our visit, while too short, was a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who wear the uniform and the profound impact it has on both the individuals who serve and their families. It is a story that resonates with countless households across the nation, and one that merits recognition and appreciation.

The News-Leader is printing a special publication in November honoring the brave men and women who have selflessly served our country, safeguarding the freedoms we cherish. Their dedication and sacrifice deserve our utmost recognition, and this year, we invite our community to come together in a unique way to celebrate our veterans.

Veterans Day, celebrated on November 11 each year, is a day when we remember and thank all military veterans for their service. It's a day to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have served, to recognize the challenges they've faced, and to express our profound appreciation. The significance of this day extends far beyond a day off work or school. It's about connecting with the stories, experiences, and lives of our veterans.

I invite the community to play an active role in honoring our veterans. We want to create a powerful and meaningful tribute that goes beyond parades and ceremonies. I’m asking you, our readers, to share your stories.

Do you have a family member, friend or neighbor who is a veteran? Have you personally served in the military? Do you have a story of resilience, camaraderie or sacrifice that you’d like to share in honor of our veterans? I want to hear from you.

Sharing your veteran stories is easy. Simply write down your experiences or the experiences of someone you know who has served in the military. You can write about a memorable moment during their service, the challenges they faced, their homecoming or any other aspect of their military journey. These stories can be heartwarming, inspiring, or even somber – all are important and worth sharing.

Once you've written your story, submit it to me by, or before, Friday, Oct. 27, by email to tdishman@fbnewsleader.com, mail it or bring it by the News-Leader office, 1235 South 10th St., Fernandina Beach, 32034. I encourage you to include any photographs or memorabilia that help tell the story.

As we approach Veterans Day, let's make it a day to remember not just as a holiday on the calendar, but as a day when our community stood together to honor those who have served. Together, we can ensure that the sacrifices made by our heroes are never forgotten.
