The Fernandina High School Mighty Marching Pirates won big in a recent competition in Springfield, Ga.

The Coastal Empire Classic band competition at Effingham County High School awarded the Mighty Marching Pirates Straight Superior awards with trophies in the percussion, auxiliary, drum major, music performance, music effect, visual performance and visual effect categories.

The 2022 show is titled “Dead Men Tell No Tales” and features music from the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack and pirate ship set backing the performers.

Tyler Odom directs the band, and during his time there, the band has received the high rating at the Music Performance Assessments five years in a row from 2017 to 2021. The next assessment takes place Nov. 5 in Jacksonville. Asa Jernigan is the Assistant Band Director with Ansley Cutshaw and Natalie Reynolds as Drum Majors and Emily Huggins as Band Captain.

The band received 10th place overall with two more competitions in October.

“WE compete again this weekend at Pierce County High School (Blackshear, Ga.), and the following Saturday at Ware County High School (Waycross, Ga.),” Odom said. “We finish the season on Nov. 5 at First Coast High School in Oceanway for the Duval.Nassau County District 17 Music Performance Assessment, where we will be rated by six adjucators.”
