After months in limbo, Brett’s Waterway Cafe in Fernandina Beach has officially announced its closure. In a Facebook post made by the restaurant Thursday, they shared their plan to stop operations this weekend with their final day of service being tomorrow, Oct. 4.
“These last few months have brought challenges, and while we had hoped to continue through October, the time has come to say goodbye,” the post said.
Brett’s has been open for 41 years and has been a prominent location for locals and tourists to gather.
In recent years, the owners and the city have been involved in a legal dispute regarding the integrity of the structure, which was deemed unsafe by inspectors and set to be demolished.
After a long period of unanswered questions about the restaurant's future, Brett’s will finally shut its doors indefinitely.
“We are deeply grateful to our guests and community for your loyalty and support. None of this would have been possible without you, and you will always be part of Brett's family,” they said.
