The Pirates celebrated spring signing day April 27, with three athletes declaring their intentions to play on the collegiate level.

Jamieson Keith (base-ball) and Brooks Rohe (football) signed national letters of intent to play their respective sport at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Andre Lucas will play foot-ball at Southern Virginia University.

“Andre played defensive back,” said Apollo Wright, head football coach at Fernandina Beach High School. “He actually played everything for us last year. He’s a great athlete, great young man.

“I’m very excited about the future. Everybody knows he can go and do big things. It’s all up to Andre.”

Lucas, 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, also played varsity basketball at FBHS.

Rohe was a 6-foot-1, 200-pound linebacker for the Pirates.

“Brooks was the heart of our defense last year,” Wright said. “He did a great job. Excellent young man. He will be missed.

“I’m proud of these two young men. They did an excellent job.”

Keith and his teammates played Tuesday in the region quarterfinal round of the state playoffs.

“Jamieson Keith is a four-year varsity player for our baseball team,” said Jon Shave, head baseball coach at FBHS. “He started the last three years. More importantly, what he’s done on the baseball field is he’s represented the school with class, with honor, how hard he’s worked in the classroom and on the baseball field is very impressive.

“I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him. I’ll be watching him every step of the way, and I know he’s going to do a lot of great things.”

Keith expressed his grati-tude to those in attendance.

“I just want to thank my family,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it without y’all. I thank all my friends, all my teammates I’ve had, have grown up with. I thank you for your support.”
