Yulee High School freshman pitcher and outfielder Mason Jones committed to Virginia Tech Wednesday afternoon. Jones is hitting .298 and leading the team with three home runs and 17 RBIs.

Tied for the team lead with five doubles and 11 stolen bases, Jones is also 5-2 on the mound with a 3.25 earned run average.

“He’s a kid that I put in the three hole from the jump, and he’s responded better than I expected,” YHS head baseball coach Fred Matricardi said. “He’s getting pitched to every night, and that’s hard to do as a freshman.

“He’s stepped up on the mound also. We had some injuries on the mound, and Mason stepped right up and has given us a chance to be where we are now. He’s a potential two-way kid at the next level. Fastball is in the 84-85 range, with a good breaking ball.

“But the bat and athleticism is where Virginia Tech was sold on him. Big time potential power at the plate and runs well also with the 11 stolen bases.

“Hard-working kid who is only going to continue to grow. I’m excited about his future and potential.”
