A team of Yulee High School students took top honors last week at the fourth annual U.S. Constitution Scholarship Foundation’s Constitution Bowl to win $6,000 in scholarships.

The foundation hosted four Nassau County high schools, a private school team and a home educated team in the event at Wildlight Elementary School. The Home Educated and Fernandina Beach High School teams advanced to the final round, with Yulee High School taking the 2023 title in front of a crowd of educators, community leaders, parents and students.

The Constitution Bowl, modeled on the old College Bowl format, showcased the intelligence and talent of our Nassau County students while educating and entertaining the audience.

Howard Pines, dean of the University of US, stated, "When we launched the first U.S. Constitution Bowl in 2019, we had no idea how it would turn out, who would show up to watch it and that it would be so exciting. The audiences are continually surprised by the students’ knowledge and quick response to questions. Each team has a coach, and they are the key to how their students perform.”

The U.S. Constitution Scholarship Foundation awarded each member of the winning team a $1,500 scholarship for the college of their choice. The Yulee team consisted of Sebastian Joinville, Chloe O'Bryan, Maya Rodrigues and Logan Maynard and was coached by Thomas Blake. The foundation awarded each member of the second-place Home Educated team a $500 scholarship. The team included Emma Norstrem, Eva Burbo, Lauren Walters and Eva Hawkes and was coached by Alisa Burbo. The foundation awarded each member of the third-place Fernandina Beach team a $250 scholarship. The FBHS team included Christina Cortes, Olivia Rogers, Kyle Hutchinson and J.B. Sellers and was coached by Steve Rathmann.

Natasha Drake, principal of Yulee High School, opened the program by welcoming everyone and introducing Pines, a member of the USCSF Board of Directors. Pines provided a brief summary of the U.S. Constitution Scholarship Foundation and thanked community leaders along with parents and students for their enthusiastic support of the competition.

Fernandina Beach Mayor Bradley Bean served as master of ceremonies, and presiding competition judges were Judge Jenny Higginbotham and Judge Jim Daniel. Sharyl Wood and Jessica Raspa served as scorekeepers, and Tricia Dunlevy was the official time keeper.

Other competitors included:

Hilliard High School: Chase Conner, Jenna Graves, Aiden Johnson, Aubrey Lewis and coached by Grant Graves and Robert McCannell.

Lindisfarne Hall: Ben Adams, Madeline Gelston, Meredith Gelston, William Cunningham and coached by Janelle Gelston.

West Nassau High School: Amy Cullen, Hayden Dunlap, Justin Housend, Joash Wollitz and coached by Kyle Bridge.
