Lady Pirates soccer team is district champion for 5th year in a row
The Fernandina Beach High School Lady Pirates soccer team captured the District 3-2A championship Thursday night, the team’s fifth straight title. The game against Providence was a nail-biter from beginning to end; the Lady Pirates won 1-0 on their home field.
Katie Rojas, goalie for the Lady Pirates, demonstrated why she is one of the top 10 goalies in Northeast Florida; she had 12 saves on the night.
After a scoreless first half and 10 minutes into the second half, Katie McNeil scored the lone goal of the game with an assist from Amy Strozinsky.
Defensively, Katy Eichele had four steals, Faith Leipau had three, Amber Teeters and Ashley Herrera had two apiece and Tony Hernandez and Peyton Bayot had one.
The Lady Pirates will host the regional playoff game at 7 p.m. Thursday. They take on Episcopal and the winner advances to the regional semifinal game Tuesday.
