Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Ragsdale Lansford, 87, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020

She was born October 10, 1932 in Gadsden, Ala. In her youth in Chattanooga, Tenn., she found work modeling, becoming a local department store favorite for swimsuit shows. Additionally, she worked for Provident Insurance, where she was a leading light in the company’s choral group and its bowling team.

After moving to Fernandina Beach, she held various positions with the Amelia Island Museum of History, city of Fernandina Beach, Nassau County Public Library System, and Nassau County Council on Aging.

She loved Amelia Island and over the years became a local scholar of Fernandina Beach history and architecture. Entertaining and engaging, Liz never met a stranger. She was that person who could enter a room of silent strangers and within a half-hour have learned their interests and created a dozen conversations.

She had a lifelong passion for books and learning, including book swaps with her hospice caregivers in her final days. She also loved to garden, and her green thumb was visible wherever she lived, be it a plot of land or pots of flowers.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mona Hennessy; a brother, Sammy Ragsdale; her parents; and her treasured canine companion, Lady.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Lansford of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Stephen Lansford of Asheville, N.C.; and grandsons, Jackson and L.J. Darden.

The family asks that any memorials be made via donation in her name to the Nassau Humane Society.
