Electrician dies in accident at Port of Fernandina

An electrician repairing a crane at the Port of Fernandina died in an accident on Friday morning “when an “unknown event occurred that caused his control cab to separate from the crane and fall to the ground,” according to a report from Deputy Chief Foxworth of the Fernandina Beach Police Department.

Foxworth estimated the fall was 100 feet, and said first responders from the police and fire departments were called to the port at approximately 8:15 a.m.

Richard Wheatley, a media contact for Kinder Morgan, said Timothy Dubberly, 58, was killed in the accident.

“It is with great sadness that we must report the Kinder Morgan family suffered a fatality this morning involving a company employee at the Kinder Morgan Nassau Terminal in Fernandina Beach,” Wheatley wrote in a news release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family. The company is providing grief counselors for employees at the terminal and also seeing to the needs of Mr. Dubberly’s family.”

Kinder Morgan is the parent company of Nassau Terminals LLC, which operates the port under a contract with the Ocean Highway and Port Authority.

Both Foxworth and Wheatley confirmed regulatory notifications to OSHA were made and that Kinder Morgan is conducting an internal investigation.

Ocean Highway and Port Authority Commissioner Richard Bruce said Friday evening that commissioners were “obviously very, very sorry to hear about the accident.”

“Somebody at the terminal called (Commissioner) Adam Salzburg, the liaison to the safety security manager,” Bruce said. “I called the safety officer at the terminal and he said the police were there, investigating. I said we’re behind you guys -- if you need us to do anything, call any of us.”

“We just don’t know that much,” Bruce added, saying he had heard the reports that Dubberly was doing maintenance work on the crane.

Timothy Dubberly is the cousin of Jimmy Dubberly, who is running for the District 2 seat on the OHPA board.
