The quarantine has kept Joel Beckham and his staff at Fernandina Beach Cycling & Fitness busy.
“We’ve pretty much sold everything in the shop,” he said from his store at 11 S. Eighth St. in Fernandina Beach, which opened in 1985 in the building that was formerly the home of Western Auto.
Beckham said he sold bicycle tires to the owner, and then eventually moved his entire business to Amelia Island.
The full-service store sells top brands, including Pivot, Fuji, Marin, Sun, 3G, James and Kestrel, with factory warranties available. He also repairs bikes and sells accessories.
Beckham said he’s seen a lot more of his bikes cruising around the island since the coronavirus pandemic sent local residents into self-isolation.
But, he hasn’t been too busy to help members of the community. He’s been delivering tricycles to the residents of Osprey Village.
“We had some people out there who bought tricycles, and then they have a friend who buys a tricycle, and somebody else buys a bicycle, not all of them from me, but a bunch have been from me,” Beckham said. “We deliver them out there to them, because they’re obviously not going to be able to drive them back or most of them aren’t going to be able to put them in a trunk. It’s a big item.”
And, Beckham said, the residents are happy to see him.
“Some of them a little more than others,” he laughed. “We just try to take care of the folks out there. They have taken care of us for a long time. The retirement community is a blessing to me. They’re kicking and they’re still loving life.”
The more than 20 residents who have tricycles participated in a Trike Poker Run on May 20, and Beckham donated water bottles and bells for prizes for the top three winners.
But, Beckham doesn’t stop there. He also works with Barnabas to provide bikes for those who need transportation for work.
“People donate bikes, and we fix them up,” he said.
He said the community stepped up and donated so many bikes, he’s currently unable to accept any donations.
