Two young men died early Saturday morning after a crash caused by a deer in the road.

John Ransom McCluskey Anderson, 18, of Callahan, and Brian Ramon Johnson, 20, of Fernandina Beach, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the accident, according to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Timothy Crosby, 19, of Yulee, was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer south on U.S. 17 near County Road 108 at 12:40 a.m. when he attempted to avoid hitting a deer. The Explorer traveled off the west shoulder, striking a tree.

Crosby was wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries. Passenger James Akins, 19, of Fernandina Beach, was also wearing a seatbelt and also suffered minor injuries.

The release says the accident was not related to alcohol.
