John Allen Richmond
John Allen Richmond, 84, of Amelia Island, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.
Born in Wellesley, Mass., he was the son of the late Philip Delano and Katherine Kimball Richmond. He grew up primarily in New Jersey, where he graduated from high school before attending college and obtaining his degree in mechanical engineering from Yale University. Upon obtaining his degree, he worked for a time with Remington Arms before joining General American Transportation in New York. He later accepted the offer to oversee the company’s Cleveland operation. While working in Cleveland, in 1970, Mr. Richmond was approached and joined the firm of Heidrick and Struggles Inc., an executive search firm that solicits and seeks out chief executives and senior-level employees. He remained with Heidrick and Stuggles until retiring in 1995. After retirement, Mr. Richmond remained in the Cleveland area until moving to Amelia Island in late 2016.
He enjoyed sailing and racing Tartan 10 sailboats, building and sailing radio-controlled sailboats, as well as the sport of golf. In addition to his interest in sailing and golf, he was a licensed fixed-wing private aircraft pilot.
Mr. Richmond leaves behind his two sons, John “Jack” Allen Richmond of Oak Ridge, N.C., and Matt Richmond and his wife, April, of Greensboro, N.C.; his two daughters, Katherine Kimball Richmond and her husband, Rodney Priddy, of New York City, and Merritt Cone Richmond and her husband, Fred Chung, of San Francisco; a sister, Lee Bowman of northeastern Connecticut; 11 grandchildren; two nephews; and a niece.
