Mrs. Virginia L. Sylvester
Mrs. Virginia L. Sylvester, 77, of Yulee, Fla., passed away Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla. after a lengthy illness.
Born in Jesup, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Nolen and Elma Rider King. Her mother’s family was a pioneer family who lived on Chesser’s Island in the Okefenokee Swamp and whose homestead continues to be a historical site there. She had lived most of her adult life in Yulee.
She was a longtime cake decorator who worked at both Winn Dixie and Publix, and it was said of her cakes, they were always perfection. That sense of perfection carried over into her craftwork and artwork. She made blankets to share and her drawing and painting skills produced beautiful works of art. Her favorite pastime was Bingo. She really loved Bingo.
A longtime member of Pecan Park Baptist Church, she was active there until her health declined.
Her children will always remember her as a feisty lady who loved and guided them into adulthood. Her loving personality made her lots of good friends and she was a good friend to many.
She leaves behind her husband, Robert W. Sylvester of Yulee; her children, Steven Sylvester of Yulee, Teresa Sylvester of Yulee, Sharon Spicer and her husband, John, of Fernandina Beach, Robert Sylvester of Fernandina Beach, and Daniel Sylvester of Yulee; her sister, Margaret Rowland and her husband, Willie Earl, of Fernandina Beach; her brother, Michael King and his wife, Becky, of Macon, Ga.; as well as 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and other extended family members.
The family received friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard with Mr. Joseph Zane Chason officiating. She was laid to rest with her parents at Bosque Bello Cemetery.
