Amelia Tree Conservancy

The Amelia Tree Conservancy had a regular membership meeting June 2 at the Police Department’s Community Room. Many attendees voiced concern over the continuing loss of the island’s protective maritime forest canopy. Discussions of how to educate developers and the public to the importance of this vital resource were discussed. Newspaper articles, flyers, contacting HOAs as well as having photos showing the depletion of the canopy were suggested.
In an effort to disseminate information about living in a maritime forest, Munsell McPhillips will be giving her presentation “The Secret Life of Trees: Living in a Maritime Forest” in two contexts — June 15, probably beginning between 9-10 a.m. (scheduled for one hour to follow the commission meeting), County Commission Chambers, and at 6 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Amelia Island Museum of History, 3rd on 3rd.
Contact information will be posted to www.ameliatreeconservancy.org and the Facebook page. The handout distributed will also be posted to Facebook. Upcoming meetings include June 14, 6:30 p.m., Nassau County Code Enforcement hearing, James S. Page Governmental Complex, 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, FL 32097; decision on the DS Ware case, lot 10 in Ocean Breeze; June 20, 6 p.m., city commission meeting, City Hall; 14th and Lime wetland.
