Summer. It brings to mind images of lazy days, sunshine and, perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind, libraries. But for many children and adults, the library becomes a haven during those summer months. It is a place to escape the heat, explore new worlds and continue learning in a fun and engaging way.
This is where the Nassau County Public Library system comes in. Designed to keep minds active and foster a love of reading, our Summer Reading program will offer a variety of exciting activities for all ages. However, to make it truly impactful and engaging, we rely on the generosity of our community. This year, we are reaching out to you to help us make this summer’s program the best one yet.
Studies have shown that children who maintain reading habits over the summer experience can help reduce what is referred to as “summer slide,” which is a loss of things learned. In addition, they return to school with a stronger vocabulary, improved comprehension skills and a more developed imagination. Summer reading programs are instrumental in preventing “summer slide.”
But beyond the academic benefits, the program fosters a lifelong love of reading. It allows children to explore new interests and develop a sense of accomplishment as they complete reading challenges. The library serves as a welcoming space and a place for discovery, all thanks to the support of our community.
We need summer reading heroes. There are two ways that you can help our summer reading program. You can donate prizes or donate funds to the library, both of which will make an enormous difference in the quality of our summer programming.
Prize donations are important. Children are motivated by the thrill of earning rewards for their efforts. We would love some age-appropriate prizes that will spark excitement such a gift certificates to local businesses, art supplies, board games, tickets to local attractions or even themed baskets based on popular books.
Another way you can assist is by making a financial contribution. These funds allow us to expand the scope of our summer reading offerings. It allows us to purchase new books and resources and plan exciting events. Even small donations can make a substantial difference.
If you are willing to donate for our summer reading program, there are several ways you can do so. You can drop off your donations at your local Nassau County Public Library branch. To make a financial donation, you can donate at your local branch library or you can also visit the Nassau County Public Library website, nassaureads.com, and go under our Quick Links section to make a donation online.
By joining forces, we can create a summer filled with discovery, excitement and a love of reading that will last a lifetime. Your generosity will help people of all ages embark on unforgettable literary adventures, fostering a passion for learning that will benefit them for years to come. Together, we can make this summer one where every child finds their perfect reading journey.
